TV wall mounting Hobart

We mount televisions across Greater Hobart on whatever the house is actually built from, which around here is rarely the brick veneer mainland installers assume. Prices are published, the wall is assessed before anything is drilled, and if we do not think your wall should carry your screen we say so before we start.

What a Hobart TV wall mounting job includes

What you get

A professional TV wall mount installation in Hobart covers eight things: the wall assessed and framing located, the position agreed with you from your seated eye line, the bracket fixed into structure rather than plaster, the screen hung and levelled, cables tidied, devices connected, picture and sound checked, and the site left clean.

That is the same whether it is a 43-inch screen in a Bridgewater rental or an 85-inch panel in a Taroona living room.

  1. Wall assessment. We establish the construction and locate the framing before a drill comes out of the van.
  2. Position agreed with you. Screen centre set from your seated eye line, not from a default height.
  3. Bracket fitted to the structure. Into studs or masonry, never into plaster or a veneer skin alone.
  4. Screen hung and levelled.
  5. Cables tidied. Surface trunking or in-wall routing, agreed before we start.
  6. Devices connected. Set-top box, console, streaming stick, soundbar.
  7. Picture and sound checked and handed over working.
  8. Site cleaned. Drop sheets down first, dust extracted as we drill.

Every wall type in Hobart, handled

This is where Hobart differs from every other Australian capital. The city holds some of the oldest housing stock in the country, and the wall behind your plaster changes both the method and the time.

Timber-framed weatherboard

Standard
Where in Hobart
West Hobart, North Hobart, New Town, Moonah, Glenorchy, and the Battery Point cottages.
Will it hold a TV
Yes. The hardwood studs behind the lining carry the load comfortably, including the largest screens sold today.
What goes wrong
Old-growth hardwood is dense enough to snap a screw or split along the grain if it is not pre-drilled. Electronic stud detectors also mislead on these walls, which is why we probe rather than trust the beep.

Lath and plaster

Higher risk
Where in Hobart
Almost any Hobart home built before 1940, which covers most of the inner suburbs: West Hobart, New Town, North Hobart, South Hobart and Sandy Bay.
Will it hold a TV
Not on its own. Lath and plaster is a finish, not a structure. Every fixing has to reach the hardwood stud behind it.
What goes wrong
Over-torque a fixing and the plaster keys break away from the lath behind the wall, so the damage spreads further than the hole you can see. We tell you before we start that a plaster repair is a genuine possibility on these walls, rather than after.

Sandstone and colonial stone

Premium
Where in Hobart
Battery Point, Salamanca, the Liverpool Street heights and the older parts of Sandy Bay.
Will it hold a TV
Usually, but it is never a phone quote. Heritage-listed stone may not be drillable at all without approval.
What goes wrong
Hobart sandstone varies enormously in hardness within a single wall, and a hole in the wrong spot cannot be undone. If the property is on the Tasmanian Heritage Register we talk about it before we drill.

Solid double brick

Standard plus
Where in Hobart
Interwar and early postwar Hobart homes across Glenorchy, Moonah and New Town.
Will it hold a TV
Yes, comfortably.
What goes wrong
Very little, structurally. The practical issue is brick dust indoors, which is a matter of extraction and drop sheets rather than difficulty.

Brick veneer over timber frame

Standard
Where in Hobart
Postwar and modern outer suburbs: Kingston, Blackmans Bay, Howrah, Old Beach and the Brighton growth areas.
Will it hold a TV
Yes, provided the fixing reaches the frame and not just the veneer skin.
What goes wrong
A veneer-only fixing can hold for months and then let go. It is the classic cause of a television coming off a wall.

Plasterboard on modern frame

Standard
Where in Hobart
New builds around Kingston Beach, Old Beach, Brighton and the Sorell growth corridor.
Will it hold a TV
Yes, into the studs. Not on anchors alone for anything of size.
What goes wrong
Steel-framed new builds need a different fixing from timber, and the two are not visually distinguishable from the room side.

Rendered blockwork and panel

Assessment needed
Where in Hobart
Contemporary architect-designed homes and waterfront apartments.
Will it hold a TV
Usually, once we know what is behind the render.
What goes wrong
An anchor sized for solid block that lands in a hollow core has almost no pull-out strength. This is one to assess rather than assume.

Heritage-listed fabric

Consultation
Where in Hobart
Registered places across the Battery Point, North Hobart and West Hobart heritage precincts.
Will it hold a TV
Often yes on non-significant internal walls. Significant fabric is a different conversation, and not one we have the authority to settle.
What goes wrong
Works to a listed place can require referral to the Tasmanian Heritage Council. We will flag it on site if we think you should call the free Heritage Tasmania advisor line before we start.

Mounting above a wood heater

It is one of the most common requests we get in Hobart and often the one we advise against. Heat, viewing height and soot all work against a screen above a working wood heater, and heat damage generally voids the television’s warranty.

Read the honest answer on mounting a TV above a wood heater or fireplace.

Soundbars and the rest of the job

Most people mounting a television are also improving the sound. We mount and wire soundbars in the same visit, which is cheaper than booking two jobs and avoids the classic problem of a soundbar that sits directly over the television’s remote sensor.

How booking works

  1. Tell us the basics. Screen size and model, the room, and roughly when the house was built. The build era tells us more about the job than anything else.
  2. We price it. A fixed price for standard walls. Sandstone and heritage-listed fabric we quote on site, because pricing those over the phone would be guessing.
  3. We book a window. Same-week across Greater Hobart, Saturdays included.
  4. We install and hand it over working. Usually 45 to 90 minutes depending on the wall.
